Welcome to day 355 on #AYearOfBuses, where we’re taking a look at another important London bus route.
Stagecoach’s 55 has a rich history, starting life initially as a tram and later a trolleybus route – the 55 and 555 respectively. Buses replaced trolleybuses in 1959, 20 years after trolleybuses themselves replaced trams in 1939.
The route itself starts from Walthamstow, in North London, taking in Leyton, Hackney, Shoreditch and Clerkenwell on its way into the heart of central London. It’s currently in the hands of New Routemasters run from Stagecoach’s Leyton garage.
