#AYearOfBuses 159: Streatham – Marble Arch

Today’s winner on #AYearOfBuses is a very special route – and one particular award has sealed its place in history.

The 159 (Streatham – Marble Arch) was the last ‘proper’ bus route in London to be worked by a British cultural icon – the AEC Routemaster. After putting in over 50 years of outstanding service on the streets of the capital, the last Routemaster ran on Arriva London’s 159 on 9 December 2005.

Routemasters did, of course, carry on in service in London – on heritage routes 9 and 15 (the latter of which we covered on day 15 for #AYearOfBuses!).
