#AYearOfBuses 184: Manchester – Huddersfield

Manchester bus 184

Today on #AYearOfBuses, we’re taking a look at a scenic cross-border route running from Manchester, over the moors and into Yorkshire.

First Manchester’s 184 connects Manchester city centre with Oldham, Saddleworth in Tameside, and Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, taking a scenic route over the Saddleworth moors.

On its long, winding route over the moors, the 184 climbs to 1,312 feet above sea level,  passing charming villages including Uppermill, home to several Industrial Revolution-era wool and cotton mills.

It’s had a long, interesting history, too, starting in 1929 and going through several iterations of non-stop express service, to today’s more conventional local stopper. And from 2004 to 2012, it was jointly operated by First Manchester and First West Yorkshire.
